Luxe Lavs: Celebrating the Holidays in New York City

A bathroom with a tub, sink and mirror.

Thinking of celebrating the holidays in New York City? You can check out the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center, ice skating rinks, Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular, creative holiday window displays, and of course, the New Year’s Eve countdown in Times Square. This month, Luxe Lavs contributors Angela Fairhurst and Natalie Compagno discovered four NYC hotels where shoppers can come in from the cold to sip hot chocolate and enjoy the warmth of a luxurious bath.

The Quin Hotel

A bathroom with marble floors and walls.

Located at 57th and Sixth Avenue, The Quin Hotel, designed by renowned architecture and design firm, Perkins Eastman, opened in November 2013. This 208-room Midtown hotel is located across the street from Bergdorf Goodman, Carnegie Hall, and is less than two blocks from Central Park. Big by New York standards, the bathrooms are a marble oasis with a large soaking tub, separate glass shower with an ample size bench, plush Frette bathrobes, embroidered slippers, and aromatic Fresh bath amenities.

The Quin unveiled our personal favorite this summer, adding its new triplex Penthouse Suite. The new suite has one of New York’s most expansive private outdoor hotel terraces with inspiring views of Central Park and Sixth Avenue, making it ideal for viewing the holiday lights. The master bathroom features spacious dual vanities, a glass-enclosed wet room with an extra-wide flat panel rain shower, and a multi-jet system. There’s also a large soaking tub overlooking the view of Sixth Avenue.

Chatwal Hotel

A bathroom with red walls and a large mirror.

Step back into the era of cocktails and calling cards and discover the Chatwal Hotel in the center of the Theatre District. The Chatwal is Times Square’s only five-star hotel and it opened in 2010. Housed in the 1905 landmark neo-Georgian brick building originally designed by architect Stanford White, modern designer Thierry Despont kept the original facade and crafted a deco-style 76-room hotel with retro touches including steamer trunks and backgammon sets.

The guest bathrooms range in size from 192 to 240 square feet. To add to the retro feel, the bathrooms are done in shiny surfaces of blue pearl granite and mirrors surrounding the rain shower and Jacuzzi spa tub. There are Séura vanishing TV mirrors, Toto heated bidet toilets, and generous Asprey amenities. The Chatwal’s Wrap Up New York for the Holidays is a gift offer that includes two-nights’ accommodations in a deluxe king room, daily breakfast, two signature spa treatments at the Red Door Spa, and one cozy Chatwal robe.

The Ludlow

A bathroom with a tub, sink and mirror.

The Ludlow boutique hotel is situated in the Lower East Side and personifies New York’s classy style meets gritty vibe. The lobby welcomes fashionable crowds with its impressive fireplace and industrial accents like pounded metal chandeliers and edgy art. This design carries into the studios, terraces, lofts, and penthouses as well, with some rooms providing cool amenities like record players next to flat screens.

The bathrooms are just as groovy. Black and white tile work connects to mosaic marble floors. The white porcelain sink has brass features and Hollywood glamour lights around the mirror. We love the rain showerheads and windowed soaking tubs with landmark views of Lower Manhattan. An exclusive, customized line of bath products by Red Flower plus bathrobes and Persian rug-inspired bath mats by Maison Martin Margiela complete the experience. When the sun goes down over the city, sparkling lights come up, making every night a decorated event.

The Plaza Hotel

A bathroom with a tub, sink and mirror.

Nothing says the holidays like meeting for a drink in a decorated hotel lobby. The Plaza Hotel, a Fairmont managed hotel, has rolled out its newest program for December celebrations. A global cocktail program designed by elite bartenders from around the world brings beautifully crafted mixes to guests at The Plaza, with a menu offering tried and true dishes as well as revived classics.

Grab a Manhattan and head up to the lavish rooms where the decadence continues into the bathrooms. White, deep chaise lounge-esque tubs are set atop gold claw feet. A separate shower with extra towels everywhere is an added regal touch. There are also dual sinks with 24-carat gold plated Sherle Wagner faucets and fixtures in every suite, soft lighting, and a gold leaf floor design.
