Luxe Lavs: Celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary

A bathroom with large windows and a bathtub

This year marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of the formation of the Canadian Confederation. Counties, cities, and provinces across Canada are celebrating the 150th birthday. In honor of this anniversary, Luxe Lavs contributor Angela Fairhurst takes a look at luxury hotel bathrooms in four of Canada’s major cities.

The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal

Located in the Golden Square Mile of Montreal, the Ritz-Carlton Montreal is the city’s first Ritz-Carlton, and its only five-star hotel. A $200 million renovation designed by local architects Provencher Roy + Associés Architects preserved and restored the hotel’s facade, renovated and redecorated the public spaces, and all 96 guest rooms and 33 suites were redesigned into contemporary luxury spaces. The renovation also converted part of the historic building into 45 private residences. The marble bathrooms have towel warmers, heated floors, Toto Neorest toilets, and televisions. Rooms have motion-activated lights that make that nighttime trip to the bathroom more graceful. A favorite was the Royal Suite (the biggest suite in Montreal) at 4,700 square feet. Its master bathroom has a crystal chandelier set above the oversized soaking tub and windowed view. The dual-sink vanity has a sitting area for applying makeup. The shower has rain power steam with additional handheld showerheads. One of the best features is an intuitive memory of guests’ temperature preferences, making adjusting the thermostat a thing of the past.

The Hotel PUR Quebec, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is located in the heart of Quebec’s revitalized St. Roch historic-which is what the city’s hi-tech businesses call home. This urban hotel was newly renovated in a multi-million dollar metamorphosis by the Quebec-based design firm Bisson and Associates. Keeping the needs of today’s traveler in mind, the sleek rooms have modern furnishings and are equipped with free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Plus, there are either European-style showers or Japanese soaking tubs. Suites have panoramic views of the city, typified by the one-bedroom presidential suite located on the top floor, which has floor-to-ceiling windows. The modern décor combines sophistication with a welcoming ease. The oversized bathroom has an elevated square sink, dark gray stone countertop, and smooth granite floors. There is a European-style shower with a bathtub and sink made by Wetstyle.

The Delta Hotels Toronto

The Delta Hotels Toronto is situated in a prime waterfront location in downtown Toronto’s entertainment district. It sits right in front of Toronto’s prominent landmark CN Tower, with a view of Lake Ontario. The 524-foot tower was designed by Page and Steele/IBI Group Architects. The hotel has modern accommodations featuring a sleek clean look with intuitive service. The rooms, including the bathrooms with giant soaker tubs, have floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to take in the view. A favorite of ours are the Corner Skyline Soaker Suites, as the extra space gives the bathrooms an even more expansive area with an added view of the harbor.

Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel

Vancouver is the west coast seaport of British Columbia and the most populous city in the province. The destination is known for its beauty, as it is surrounded by the mountains and the sea. The city is also a stop on many people’s “bucket list” vacations, such as an Alaskan Cruise or the Rocky Mountaineer Railtour. The Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel is ideally located in downtown’s city center, just two blocks from the waterfront and the cruise ship terminal. Many of the hotel’s guest rooms have views overlooking the North Shore Mountains and the Vancouver Harbor. The M Suite is the presidential suite in the hotel, designed by False Creek Design of Vancouver. The inspiration for the suites includes all the natural elements found in British Columbia. The wood floors represent the trees; water is in teal and blue accents and artwork; and sun is found in gold accents and the stone tabletops. The bathrooms come complete with soaker tubs and have blinds that can be fully opened to allow natural light to flood the washroom.
